What is TMJ disorder or TMD?
TMJ is your temporomandibular joint. Simply put, it’s the joint that holds your jaw to your head. TMJ disorders can happen from trauma, stress, habit, genetics and cause all sorts of problems both immediate and chronic. Often, people will not understand it’s related to their jaw.

Do You Experience Any of These TMJ Symptoms?
Life isn’t constant, and neither is our mouth. Our jaws and teeth are constantly changing and sometimes leads to an misaligned bite or stressed bite (called a malocclusion). This can cause all sorts of tmj symptoms such as:- Headaches and migraines
- Jaw clicking
- Joint popping
- Sore jaw muscle
- Pain in your teeth and surrounding gum areas
- Inconsistent bite when you chew or close your mouth
- Stiff neck and stiff jaw
Your Headaches Could Be Starting In Your Mouth
Often patients do not mention consistent headaches or head pain to their dentist because they don’t see the correlations, but we urge you to tell us whatever health issues you are experiencing. Tight bites or tooth pain could be the root cause of your mild tension headache or even migraine. Our team is trained to look for wear and tear from teeth grinding or tension in the jaw, two factors in consistent headaches. A consultation with a dentist at the Burlington Family Dental Centre will help understand if that could be contributing to your head pain.Bruxism is the clenching or grinding of the teeth that often occurs while a person is sleeping. The symptoms of bruxism are:
- A sore, tired jaw
- Difficulty in opening and closing your mouth
- Sensitive teeth
- Earaches or pain in your jaw joint
Bruxism can cause other dental problems
When you brux, the force on your teeth is many times greater than during normal chewing. These forces can cause:
- Flattened or worn-down teeth
- Teeth chipped at the gumline
- Loose teeth
- Damage to the bone around your teeth
- Damage to your jaw joint
How We Treat TMJ Disorders
How We Treat Teeth Grinding, Jaw Pain, Headaches & Bruxism
No matter what is causing your TMD, it’s important to get treatment early on to prevent damage and restore harmony to your mouth
Though all of the causes of bruxism are not known, stress is often a factor. If this is the case, a variety of stress reduction techniques may be recommended. We may also recommend medication to temporarily reduce stress and relieve pain.
Crowns, Bridges and Dental Restorations: Sometimes, spaces between the teeth, worn teeth, or teeth that are out of alignment may cause bruxism. Crowns, bridges, or other dental restorations can restore your bite and eliminate grinding and clenching.
Nightguard: A common and effective treatment for stopping the damage caused by bruxism is the use of a nightguard. A nightguard is a plastic device that fits over your top or bottom teeth and protects them from the damage caused by grinding. A custom nightguard, made from models of your mouth, usually offers the best protection.
You may not believe that you are grinding at night, because you do not hear it whilst asleep. Often your bed partner will hear you but may not mention it. If your teeth are starting to look worn, or are shifting, you should call us for an evaluation. We will diagnose the situation and offer you alternatives of management to minimise this type of trauma.
Botox: That’s right. Your dentist can use Botox to treat TMJ at the clinic and it’s a very effective therapy at treating headaches and migraines.

Is TMJ Covered by OHIP
This is one question we get asked a lot. TMJ treatment is mostly a dental service and therefore, it wouldn’t be covered by OHIP. However, if you need medical surgery, it would then be covered.
In the meantime, we can help you discover if TMJ therapy can be covered by your dental plan, whether it’s all or partial.
